Wear Sunscreen!
During my pregnancy I developed a pyogenic granuloma on my thumb- basically a benign but nasty looking growth. It got bigger the farther along I got and in true Amy fashion I ignored it. I finally showed a few doctor friends and my OBGYN- none of them knew what it was. Right after I gave birth a doctor came in at the request of my OBGYN and was able to diagnose it and refer me to a dermatologist. When I went to see the dermatologist a few weeks after Asa was born, I decided I should also point out a mole I had that was on my leg. The only reason I wanted to point it out was because of the color- it was black. The texture and size weren't alarming, but ever since it developed there was a nagging voice in the back of my mind that it just wasn't right. However, I still neglected to get a mole check- it had been over a year.
The results of the biopsy weren't great- it was melanoma. Thankfully, the prognosis was good. They had no reason to believe it had spread. I was then referred to a general surgeon who took a decent size chunk out of my leg this past Monday. Morale of the story- wear sunscreen and see your dermatologist! Thank goodness I developed the granuloma during my pregnancy!
